Creswell Crags Museum & Archaeological Park
My tenure as Director at Creswell Crags began under challenging circumstances, following the withdrawal of financial support from both Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire County Councils. This setback became the defining factor in shaping my strategic approach in the years that followed.

Through a critical reassessment of operations, I repurposed investment to expand access to an underutilised cave, expanding our educational programs for schools. The later discovery of the Witch Marks presented an extraordinary opportunity, sparking a global marketing campaign that significantly raised the museum’s profile.

The pandemic created a unique opportunity to collaborate with industry experts, including Morris Hargreaves McIntyre, Partners in Retail, Jura, and The Friendly CFO. Together, we conducted a comprehensive review of strategy, branding, finances, and commercial operations. This initiative led to a dramatic increase in retail and catering revenue, more robust financial management, and a revitalised brand identity.

Additionally, we forged a groundbreaking partnership with the University of Nottingham’s Museum of Archaeology, allowing the Creswell Learning Team to serve as their official education providers for school visits. However, my proudest achievement remains the development of a strong, ambitious leadership team—one that continues to drive the organisation forward with entrepreneurial spirit.

"I worked very closely alongside Paul at Creswell Crags over many years when Paul was Director. Paul draws on his widespread experience in retail and across a diverse range of heritage projects to deliver clarity of thought and an innovative response “outside the box”. I always admire his thoughtful, measured, enthusiastic and inclusive approach to solving problems, which will be immensely useful to clients."
Dr Tim Caulton, retired Chair, Creswell Heritage Trust.
